Britain-based filmmaker Gurinder Chadha ’s next directorial venture will be Sony Pictures’ $80 to 90 million project ‘I Dream of Jeanie’.
Gurinder, who is in the capital city with her husband to promote her forthcoming film Bride and Prejudice , confirmed that she will wield the megaphone for ‘I Dream of Jeannie’, which is based on the popular 1960s American sitcom about a girl named Jeannie.
However, Gurinder made it clear that the film will be “a prequel, of how she becomes a Jeannie after she rebels against the King’s harem system in Arabia and is cursed to always say ‘Yes Master’.”
Gurinder added that the subject of the movie appealed to her because it is feminist and has values close to her.
“I could have done a Hollywood film before, but I had not found a great script so far,” said Gurinder.
She plans to shoot some part of the film in Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, she is also co-producing the film ‘Mistress of Spices’, which will be directed by her husband Paul Mayeda Berges, and will star Aishwarya Rai and Anupam Kher .
