SCOOP!! & NEWS 'Austen-tacious' Bollywood 'Bride' gets mixed reviews in UK06th Oct 2004 19.02 IST By Aparajita Ghosh Gurinder Chadha's ' Bride and Prejudice ' is getting mixed reviews in UK. Some critics lauded the movie for its adaptation of Jane Austen's novel into a colorful Indian setting, while others opined that the film is not half good as the real thing by Austen. After an Austen-tacious (read ostentatious) premiere in London, Aishwarya Rai , Martin Hendersen starrer 'Bride and Prejudice' is subjected to the scrutiny of critics.
The BBC gave the movie four out of five stars but also remarked on the lack of chemistry between Ash and Hendersen. As quoted, the two "did not generate the electricity quite befitting their suppressed passion." But, the review said, the "inherent charm (of the story) wins out over their characters' foibles." The movie's preview at website icwales, goes on to say that while "English literature professors may be shaking their heads in disapproval...the mainstream audiences will be treated to the lip-synched musical spectaculars of Bollywood at its cheesiest." Another website empireonline.co.uk expressed the apprehension that the movie "may prove rather too Bollywood and not enough of a fusion, and Austen may not mesh terribly well with musical numbers. Still, with its good-looking cast and Bollywood influences, 'Bride and Prejudice' should look fabulous." More unsparing criticism was forthcoming from another British site futuremovies.co.uk which, although, called the movie spectacular and resplendent in look but also criticized it for being too conservative and gaudy. The site also commented about the lack of chemistry between Ash and Martin. Other British critics accuse the film of taking too much cinematic liberty in telling Austen's story. (The conflict between Darcy and Elizabeth in the original was the result of their different social standings, but in 'Bride and Prejudice' the conflict arises because of the cross cultures of the two leading characters.) However, Gurinder Chadha is adamant that the themes of Jane Austen's timeless novel - which was voted by the British public as one of their favorite books in a recent BBC poll - are a perfect fit for a 21st-century, Bollywood-style film. |
