Unable to get required dates from Rani Mukherjee , filmmaker Mira Nair has signed Bengali belle Konkana Sen for her next movie, which is based on Pulitzer winning author Jhumpa Lahiri's book ‘The Namesake’.
The movie, with the same title as book, will be shot mainly in Kolkata and New York (settings of Lahiri’s story). The movie tells the story of an expatriate Bengali woman named Ashima, and her struggle to trace her roots and come to terms with cross-cultural influences.
Nair’s original choice to play the protagonist was Rani, but the hazel-eyed beauty has no dates to spare for the filmmaker. So Nair has now singed Konkana to essay the role.
Nair has visited various places in Kolkata – like the Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial, and a book market on College Street – some of which may be possible shooting locations for the film which is scheduled to go on floors this November.
Aurora Studios at Salt Lake in the city has been chosen for the indoor shooting.
