The Shah Rukh Khan starrer Swades was one of the most eagerly awaited films ever. However, the Ashutosh Gowarikar - directed venture has met with a lukewarm response at home after its release.
The story of the NASA scientist Mohan Bhargav returning to India has turned out to be a preachy discourse rather than an entertaining film.
The biggest weak point of Swades seems to be that it has SRK, the actor and not SRK the superstar. Though SRK’s acting has been appreciated in Swades, it is SRK the superstar that sets the cash registers ringing at the box-office here in India.
But Swades has opened to smashing box office responses worldwide.
According to a press release issued by UTV, the co-producers and overseas distributors of the film, Swades has grossed $424,804 on 74 screens in the first three days of its release across North America.
Swades has also recorded the third largest per screen average at $6,667 beating heavyweight Hollywood flicks like Polar Express and The Incredibles, and just below Ocean's Twelve.
In Dubai, it has crossed $175,000 in its opening weekend - substantially above the previous SRK starrer Veer Zaara .
So Swades may be rejected in Swades but it is already a hit in Pardes.
