True to their names, Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee emerged as the best actors at the Hero Honda 11th Annual Star Screen Awards.
The event, held in Mumbai on Tuesday night, was filled with the glam and glitter typical of tinsel town. But there was also an expression of gam ka ehsaas (feeling of sadness) for the people affected by the Tsunami disaster.
Shahrukh won the best actor award for his performance in Veer Zaara and Rani walked away with the honors for Best actress ( Hum Tum ) and Best-Supporting actress (Yuva). Preity Zinta must have lost some charm in her dimply smile as her performance in Veer Zaara failed to fetch her a statuette.
Abhishek Bachchan won the well-deserved best supporting actor award for his much appreciated performance in Mani Ratnam’s movie Yuva .
One surprise of the evening was when young director Kunal Kohli was honored for best director award for his Hum Tum. Kunal emerged triumphant over other talented directors like Ashutosh Gowarikar ( Swades ), Farhaan Akhtar ( Lakshya ), Govind Nihalani ( Dev ) and his own mentor Yash Chopra (Veer Zaara).
Veer Zaara, however, got four awards in the evening – best film, best actor (SRK), best story and dialogues (Aditya Chopra).
Songwriter Javed Akhtar ’s special tsunami song Zindagi Pukarati Hai was performed on stage by as many as eighteen singers. Akhtar himself went on stage and asked the audience to spare some moments to remember those who lost lives or livelihood in the tsunami disaster.
Akhtar said: Yeh shaam bahut rangeen hai, Is shaam mein gam ka ehsaas bhi hai (This evening is colorful, but there is also a feeling of sadness in it).
The awards will be announced formally on Star Plus channel Saturday.
