SCOOP!! & NEWS British media pays tributes to Parveen Babi28th Jan 2005 15.41 IST By ApunKaChoice Bureau Paying tributes to Bollywood actress Parveen Babi , a leading British daily on Wednesday described her as a "voluptuous" star who seduced the 1970 Bollywood audience. "Parveen Babi, bikini-clad and voluptuous in the chaste Bollywood of the 1970s, began acting while still a student and was an overnight phenomenon because of her wheatish - fair-skinned - beauty and rakish appeal as a woman who shockingly smoked and drank on screen," The Times daily said. 
Babi, who died recently, never broke out of being a glamour actress and is remembered more for the glamour than as a serious performer, it wrote in its obituary column. But she stayed at the top until the early 1980s, starring in more than 50 Hindi films, including the 1975 blockbuster, Deewar , the paper noted. Babi, who was in her 50s, came from the old royal family of Junagadh and mixed aristocratic poise with an on-camera image of defiant Western-style liberation, it said, adding that indeed, she looked as much Western as she did Indian, which was part of her mysterious appeal to the Indian cinema-going masses. In 1977, Time magazine featured her on its cover as the face of the modern Indian woman, the daily said. Within five years of that she began to fade from filmmaking and later spent ten years abroad, perhaps to escape the attention of gossip columnists speculating about her personal life, it said.
