Mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan , lissome Shilpa Shetty and lyricist Javed Akhtar have resolved to extend all cooperation to the campaign against HIV and AIDS that has devastated the lives of millions across the world.
''We will be too happy to be attached with the cause to fight AIDS,'' Bachchan declared amidst thunderous applause at the HIV Congress 2005 in Mumbai.
Quoting a limerick, Bachchan said he felt like the boy who had joined the funeral party for a ride as he was in the midst of great doctors and knew nothing about the disease.
Recalling the 1982 incident, when he came out from the jaws of death after a mishap during shooting at Bangalore, Bachchan said he had tremendous confidence in Indian doctors and did not prefer to go abroad for treatment. ''I had the resources to fly abroad for treatment. But I had faith in Indian doctors,'' he added.
Shilpa, who has portrayed the role of an HIV positive in Revathi -directed Hindi film Phir Milenge , said she understood the stigma attached to it and the trauma and pain the patients and their relatives undergo.
Akhtar, assuring full help for the campaign, said there was need for sex education in schools. He had a dig at a Union Minister, who had spoken against it.
He lamented that there were not many government hospitals dealing with AIDS.
