Sushmita Sen has played a variety of roles in the past. She was an upright police officer in Samay , the ravishing teacher in Main Hoon Na and played a small role as the elder sister of Kareena Kapoor in Bewafaa .

We also told you recently that Sushmita has been confirmed in Tanuja Chandra 's ‘Runway’ in which she will portray a woman from Gujarat during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

But it is Sushmita’s performance as a prostitute in Kalpana Lajmi 's under-production Chingari that is drawing rave reviews from all quarters.

Kalpana has this to say about Sushmita's performance in Chingari: “It is an extraordinary performance by any means which is possible only with a committed actor.”

And Sushmita herself says that playing a prostitute in Chingari was tough. She adds that this was the first time that she was playing a prostitute and she took it as a challenge to portray the character as realistically and differently as possible.

The former Miss Universe further adds that Basanti, the character that she plays in Chingari, is worldly wise yet there's certain innocence about her. She is strong yet vulnerable. She is tomboy yet she is feminine. Yes, she is also very besharam just like prostitutes are.

Chingari has Sushmita playing the character who as a 16-year-old was forced to become a prostitute after her alcoholic father sells her off. She later leads the fight against male oppression in a Bihar village.

But Sushmita insists that though she plays a prostitute in Chingari the film shows that she is not living with disgrace.

To carry each and every role with style and substance seems to be becoming Sushmita’s forte.
