SCOOP!! & NEWS Mughal-e-Azam charms Indian-Americans05th Apr 2005 17.50 IST By AKC Bureau Hindi cinema’s epic Mughal-e-Azam is being well received and appreciated by the Indian community in the US. A spruced up, colored version of the 1960s movie by the late director K. Asif opened in New York on April 1. Reports have it that over 150 people attended the New York premiere and many of them came out looking visibly overwhelmed by the experience. 
Some viewers called the movie “awesome”, the others called it “grandiose”, “romantic” and “incredibly moving”. The film was also praised in reviews on LA Times and other American dailies. Starring Dilip Kumar (as prince Salim), Prithviraj Kapoor (as king Akbar) and Madhubala (as courtesan Anarkali), the film has all the elements of a great classic. It has grandiloquent dialogues, brilliant performances, outstanding music and larger than life characters. Mughal-e-Azam was made by K. Asif over the period of nine years from 1951 to 1960. It was made at a whopping budget of $3 million then. And an extra million dollars were spent on it recently to restore and to convert it from black and white format to color. The movie will be released in dozens of theatres in the US during this month.
