SCOOP!! & NEWS Pather Panchali at Cannes06th May 2005 19.00 IST By N K Deoshi Legendary Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s movie Pather Panchali will be shown in the ‘Classic’ section of Cannes film festival. Forty-nine years ago, Pather Panchali created history by winning a Cannes award. And now in its fiftieth year, the world of little Durga and Appu – captured brilliantly by the late filmmaker – will unspool on the big screen on May 12 to open the Classic section of the festival. 
Earlier, Satyajit Ray’s son, Sandip, Ray’s favorite actor Soumitra Chatterjee and Censor chief Sharmila Tagore (who began her acting career in one of Ray’s films) were expected to fly to Cannes to attend the screening. But now it seems that only officials from NFDC and DFF (Directorate of Film Festivals) will get the privilege. Although the original print of Pather Panchali got destroyed in a fire some years ago, an upgraded print, improvised by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, has been approved for the screening. This year’s Cannes fest will also see a number of Indian film personalities. Aishwarya Rai will visit the event as the L’Oreal ambassador. Nandita Das has the honor to be on the jury panel.
