Two days before death, Sunil Dutt did his last noble act

Just days before he left this world, actor-politician Sunil Dutt donated Rs 25,000 to the widow of a labourer to help her in the marriage of her daughter. Such was the integrity and large heartedness of this great, departed soul.

Sunil Dutt was the man who felt and fought for the downtrodden. So when he read media reports on Sunday about Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat donating Rs one lakh and five sarees to widow of a migrant labourer (who had donated his eyes, kidneys and liver after a fatal accident four months back), Dutt could not hold himself back from making his own “humble contribution.”

On Monday, a day after the reports and just two days before he died of cardiac arrest, Sunil Dutt wrote a letter to the Vice President, saluting him for his generous gesture and including in the letter an unnamed cheque of Rs 25,000 to be given to the labourer's widow for her daughter's wedding.

Here is an excerpt from the letter Sunil Dutt sent to Mr. Shekhawat:

“Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawatji, I went through yesterday’s (Sunday’s) newspaper reports ‘VP reaches out to family of migrant labourer who lit up six lives in death’. It was one of the finest human gestures because in today’s world of materialism, very few people are there like you who feel for the poor. I sincerely salute you for that. I’m sending you a blank cheque of Rs 25,000…Please hand over this cheque to the labourer’s widow when you attend her daughter’s wedding. This is a very humble contribution from my side, getting the inspiration from you. Thanking you, with regards, Sunil Dutt.”

In response to Sunil Dutt’s gesture, the Vice-President told a news daily: “Today, I learnt of Sunil Dutt’s fine gesture. I will definitely fulfill this last wish of his. I salute him. God bless his soul.”
