Women rule the Bollywood roost this Friday

Two films with women-centric themes will hit the theatres this Friday.

One tells the story of turbulent relationships of three women with their men, while the other, quite contrary, tells the tale of two con women who love to dupe men.

Critic-turned-filmmaker Khalid Mohammad has a penchant for women-oriented subjects. He has written the scripts for movies like Zubeida and Mammo (both directed by Shyam Benegal). Khalid’s own directorial ventures – Fiza and Tehzeeb – explored the lives of women protagonists in different ways.

And now he is coming back this Friday with a movie about three women, their love, their pain and their search for their own identities. Silsiilay has Tabu , Bhumika Chawla , Riya Sen and Celina Jaitley playing the lead roles.

Tabu plays a married woman whose marriage with husband (played by Kay Kay Menon) has run dry because he is seeing another woman (Celina). Bhumika plays an actress who is in a live-in relationship with a man (Rahul Bose) who has ceased to feel any emotions for her. Riya Sen, on the other hand, plays a young receptionist who has two guys in her life – one, her office colleague (Jimmy Shergill), and the other a rich lad (Ashmit Patel).

Khalid Mohammad says that his movie Silsiilay aims to show different relationships from a woman’s perspective. The story of the three female characters is woven together to show a woman’s point of view on love and life.

While Silsiilay is a serious movie, releasing alongside it is Bachke Rehna Re Baba , a zingy, sassy comedy about two con women.

This movie by director Govind Menon has Rekha and Mallika Sherawat playing a mausi-bhanji duo who entice and seduce rich men into and out of marriage. Rekha plays an experienced con who lures rich men into marriage while her bhanji seduces them, thereby leading to a divorce and takeover of big money and property as alimony.

The film has a song sung by Rekha. It also features a hilarious lovemaking scene between Rekha and actor Paresh Rawal .

According to a trade analyst, women-centric films fare quite well with family audience and female viewers. And the simultaneous release of Silsiilay and Bachke Rehna Re Baba bodes well for the box-office too as one movie takes a serious look at women’s lives, while the other intends to entertain with a flippant portrayal of two beautiful swindlers.

It’s women power ruling the roost in tinsel town this weekend.
