Bollywood movies raking it in at box-office abroad

The Bollywood tale of two cons, Bunty Aur Babli is closing in on one million mark in its box-office earnings in US. In the UK, Parineeta has risen up the charts to the eighth position. No doubt, recent Bollywood releases are raking it in at the box-office abroad.

No matter how much you criticize it for its ‘escapist’, ‘over-celebratory’ style, the fact remains that the Bollywood cinema is spreading its reach to the lands beyond the seven seas.

According to the estimates, Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee starrer Bunty Aur Bubly has grossed collections approximating $901,867 (close to one mil) in it’s first 4 weeks at the US box-office.

The recent release Parineeta , too, is faring quite well. The movie opened up two weeks back at 23rd place on the US charts and has retained its position in its second week’s run, so far earning $162,492 on the 47 screens it was shown on.

In the UK, the audience response to Parineeta is still stronger. The movie opened on UK charts at the ninth position and rose to the eighth this week, raking in a decent figure of £82,938 so far.

Bollywood’s other two releases – Silsiilay and Bachke Rehna Re Baba have, on the other hand, met with a lukewarm response at the b-o abroad.

But what is most eagerly awaited is the coming weekend’s release Paheli , that stars Shah Rukh Khan as a ghost lover. The film, starring Rani Mukherjee as SRK’s love interest, has a cameo by Amitabh Bachchan .

The film’s director Amol Palekar is a winner of many National Awards. According to him, Paheli is based on a Rajasthani folk tale that has a universal meaning.

Expectations are high that Paheli will set the cash registers ringing at the theatres abroad. Well, considering the increasing popularity of Bollywood in Europe and the US of late, these expectations might come true.
