Sarkar - Complexities of family and politics

Maverick film director Ram Gopal Varma and Bollywood film star Abhishek Bachchan recently promoted the film Sarkar in the capital.

Sarkar, which means the chief, the master or the lord, is the story of a man ( Amitabh Bachchan ) with immense power and influence, and his family.

The movie brings the legendary Bachchan and his son Abhishek together in the same film. After being real life father and son, the two are all set to play reel life father and son.

Apart from the official union of the father-son duo, the film also brings Big B and Varma together.

Although the movie doesn't have any similarity with Sarkar made in 1951 except for the name, Sarkar, is inspired by 'The Godfather', regarded as one of the landmark movies in Hollywood, which catapulted Marlon Brando, and Al Pacino to international fame and stardom.

Speaking about the movie, Abhishek said: "Sarkar is the story of a very powerful family living in the city of Mumbai, and how they have to deal with situations regarding their respective place in the society. It is the story of this family and how it has to contend with their problems on a day to day basis."

Varma who has directed Amitabh and Abhishek in the film said that he did not cast the father-son duo because they were father and son in real life

"Amitabh and Abhishek are great actors. I did not cast them because they are father and son. I did not have that in mind at all," explained Varma.

He also revealed that Sarkar is about a family in a powerful position and a man who does things outside the law.

"He lives life according to own certainty and nevertheless has a sense of right and wrong. The main issue that is portrayed in Sarkar is that of the complexities of family and politics on a high level," Varma added.

Even though Bachchan's role in Sarkar can be compared to that of Marlon Brando in 'The Godfather', he however portrays the Godfather in his own signature style and charisma.

Although only time will tell whether Sarkar can actually make it as big as 'The Godfather' did, as of now the film is looking all set to take on the box office.
