SarkarSarkar or Yakeen!

Bollywood this Friday offers two very different films. One is a crime-political thriller starring top cine stars, the other is a story of a couple whose marriage gets into trouble after an accident.

The first half of this year ends with one of the most awaited films of the year - Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar , which released on Thursday.

While Varma says that Sarkar is his "personal tribute" to Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 classic 'The Godfather', similarities are being drawn between Sarkar's protagonist Subhash Nagare and Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

These speculations get further legitimacy given the fact that Varma held a special screening of the movie for Thackeray and his family a week before the movie's official release.

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan plays the protagonist Subhash Nagare, while Abhishek Bachchan plays his younger son who returns to the family after completing his education abroad.

In his director's cut, Ram Gopal Varma says that Sarkar is not a clone of 'The Godfather'. In other interviews, he has also downplayed the comparisons between Amitabh's character and Bal Thackeray. However, Ramu did make clear that the character Amitabh plays in the movie is an autocrat who rules the city with an iron fist.

"By nature, he (Subhash Nagare) possesses the ability, the charisma, the intelligence and the Machiavellian cunning to control the working of the city, in all its various aspects. He even dispenses justice when the common man cannot obtain it from the law keepers - or the government, police and judiciary," Varma is quoted.

Gauging from the critics' reviews of the movie, it appears that Varma has combined the elements of Coppola's movie with Bal Thackeray's character in Sarkar.

The other release of this Friday is Yakeen that stars the Asambhav pair of Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra . The movie is the directorial debut of dialogue writer Girish Dhamija.

Yakeen tells the story of a business tycoon (Arjun) and his wife (Priyanka). The movie shows how their marriage is affected after a fateful accident. Suspicion, greed, lust and adultery spoil their once-happy marriage.

According to some trade analysts, Sarkar is expected to have a good opening but its eventual fate will be decided during its runs in the coming weeks. Yakeen, on the other hand, is not riding high on expectations.
