Saif Ali KhanSaif gets his due – a National Award for Hum Tum
13th July 2005  21.00 IST

Ignored at most of the popular awards this year, Saif Ali Khan has finally been given his due with the National Film Award for the Best Actor for his performance in Hum Tum .

Pipping to the post the other strong contenders like Shah Rukh Khan (for Swades ), Saif pulled off a surprise at the 52nd National Film Awards announced in Delhi today.

Chairman of the Jury for Feature Films, Sudhir Mishra, defended the choice of Saif, saying: "Shahrukh in Swades was not a bad performance. There were other performances also which were good. But here is an actor who is approaching a role in a different way."

Saif was commended by the 17-member jury, headed by filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, for his "sheer ease, subtlety and spontaneity in portraying a complex and demanding role".

Pre-empting any scepticism on the choice of Saif, a popular but underrated actor, Mishra said the jury was prepared to defend its decision.

"We felt all the time actors are honoured only for heavy duty performances... acting should not be all about trembling lips... it can be equally difficult to skate through emotions," Mishra remarked.

Another surprise of the day was that Aishwarya Rai did not win the National Award for her performance in Raincoat . Rather, it was the Kannada actress Thaara who won the Best Actress Award for her powerful portrayal of a young Muslim wife boldly questioning the traditional laws of her community in the film `Hasina'.

The Madhur Bhandarkar-directed Hindi film Page 3 dominated the Awards for 2004, winning three awards in the Feature Film Section, including the `Swarna Kamal' for best film for a complex and daring attempt which exposes the shallow world of the socialites in a manner which is both savagely satirical yet gently ironical.

The film also won the Best Screenplay and Best Editing Awards.

The award for Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment was shared by Yash Chopra's Veer Zaara and Tamil film `Autograph'.

Veteran filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta won the Best Direction Award for the Bengali film `Swapner Din' for his complex handling of the socio-political situation in West Bengal.

In the Best Feature Film in each of the language specified in the Schedule VIII of the Constitution, Rituparno Ghosh's "Raincoat" was given the best Feature film in Hindi award.
