Did Salman threaten Ash?

Mumbai police is ascertaining the veracity of a telephonic conversation purportedly between Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai , in which the actor is trying to bully her into performing for a programme of gangster Abu Salem and threatening her with his underworld connections.

The conversation, published by Hindustan Times Mumbai edition on Thursday, was recorded in 2001, the newspaper said. A TV news channel also played the tapes.

Meanwhile, Salman's lawyer, Deepesh Mehta said the story was "false and fabricated".

"It cannot be true because if the police had the cassette four years ago, they would have taken action against Salman then," he said.

"This is an attempt by media to sensationalise, and the voice in the cassette is certainly not of Salman Khan," Mehta said.

DCP Dhananjay Kamalakar of Mumbai Crime Branch said that the conversation was being verified.

"We believe it is during the period when film producer Bharat Shah was booked for alleged links with the underworld, and we are checking the records with us," he said.

In the conversation, Ash warns Salman that he is drunk and his phone was likely being tapped, but the actor, continues to "flaunt" his connection with underworld figures Salem, Chota Shakeel, Dawood Ibrahim and Guru Satam.

The conversation showed how Salman Khan tried to intimidate Aishwarya saying he could ask the underworld to shoot the actress and her family.

The conversation begins with Salman asking Aishwarya, "are you doing the Salem show or not? I want to know whether you are doing the Salem show or not?

Salman claims that he knew before hand that the Hindi film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke , produced by Bharat Shah, which eventually dragged him in a police case for alleged underworld links, was funded by gangster Chota Shakeel.

"No. Listen to me. Chori Chori Chupke Chupke was a Chota Shakeel film. I was the only one who knew. Not even Nadeem Rizvi or Bharat Shah," Salman is heard saying in the tapes, the HT report said.

The actor claimed that he worked in the film, as he was scared of Shakeel.
