Mahesh Manjrekar is playing down the comparisons being made between Viruddh and Mahesh Bhatt’s movie Saaransh. Viruddh tells the story of an elderly couple (played by Mr. Bachchan and Ms. Tagore) who take on the corrupt system after the untimely death of their only son (played by John).
Bhatt’s Saaransh was also based on a similar story, but Manjrekar insists that similarities between the two flicks are just incidental. He says Viruddh is inspired from the real story of a couple he knows.
“Viruddh is inspired by a real life couple who lost their only son when he was 27. I know the family at a personal level,” Manjrekar is quoted by an entertainment site.
Describing Viruddh as “the love-story of a 60-plus couple” Manjrekar said that the movie explores the emotional bond between the elderly couple who become each other’s support in the times of crisis.
Manjrekar originally wanted to create a casting coup by signing Saif Ali Khan as Sharmila Tagore’s son in the movie. However, Saif’s dates didn’t work out and John Abraham was eventually roped in for the role.
Viruddh is also Amitabh Bachchan’s home-production. The movie will have its premiere on Thursday, July 21, at a suburban multiplex of Mumbai. The premiere is exclusively for celebrities and stars of the film industry.
