Denying ‘playing any role’ in her son and Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan bagging the National Award for the film Hum Tum , Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Sharmila Tagore has said the actor had the ability to win the honour and he deserved it.
So much hue and cry was raised when Saif was declared this year’s National award winner. Many alleged that he was chosen – against other better contenders like Shah Rukh Khan for Swades – because his mother Ms. Tagore used her clout and influence.
But now Ms. Tagore has come to defend her son’s choice for this year’s National Awards.
Ms. Tagore told a news agency: “It is wrong to say that I used my clout and influence in getting Saif the National Award. This is totally baseless. This controversy is totally unwarranted and unfounded.”
“It is a committee of the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry that decides the awards and the Censor Board has no say in it,” added Ms. Tagore, who was in New Delhi to participate in the National Seminar of Consumer Coordination Council, said while talking to media persons.
Sharmila Tagore is tipped to become the brand ambassador of the Council and an announcement to this effect will be made soon.
