Dutta starts his remake of ‘Umrao Jaan’ with the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai in the lead role. Reports are that the formidable actress Shabana Azmi has expressed a keen desire to play mother to Ash in the remake of the classic epic. 
So what is the historical angle? The interesting fact is that Shabana's mother Shaukat Azmi had played mother to the original 'Umrao Jaan' Rekha in Muzaffar Ali's version that was made in 1981. If Dutta indeed succumbs to the desire of Shabana, then it may well turn out to be the ultimate casting coup. Dutta has also signed Ash for his biopic on the life of Jaipur maharani Gayatri Devi. However, Dutta will shoot ‘Umrao Jaan’ first and then move on to the movie on Gayatri Devi next year. Interestingly, both films will have Ash playing a real life character. Related J. P.
