BBC describes 'Sholay' as the best ever Bollywood film

It has just completed three decades in Bollywood and yet Sholay remains the most popular, most talked-about and the most-watched film in India.

And the legendary classic, which was made by Ramesh Sippy in 1975, has not lost its charm even for viewers in Britain.

BBC Asian Network celebrated the 30th anniversary of the film’s release on August 15, while describing it as the best ever Bollywood film for many years.

BBC told its listeners that the film "is renowned for its songs, giving us classics such as ‘Yeh Dosti’ and ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’.

"Despite the films many stars with top stars like Dharmendra , Hema Malini , Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan the actor that left a mark on everyone’s minds was the new actor at the time Amjad Khan who played 'Gabbar Singh', the most memorable villain in Bollywood till date due to his ability to make the audience quiver in their seats. Gabbar Singh remains famous particularly due to his one liners."

The fact that the film is being remade by Ram Gopal Varma , with cast Bachchan as Gabbar Singh was also highlighted.

Listeners were given the chance to have their say on the best musical track in the film as part of a series of station wide programming of the blockbuster.

As part of the celebration the BBC Network conducted exclusive interviews with Salim Khan, and director Sippy, while the famous duo Raj and Pablo looked at the best scenes in the film.

The celebrations will end on August 19 when Nikki Bedi includes a five part series on the story of ‘Sholay’ in her programme.

In Varma’s remake, apart from Bachchan as Gabbar, Abhishek Bachchan will play Veeru, Mohit Ahlawat will play Jai and south superstar Mohanlal will play the role of Thakur. The rest of the cast is yet to be decided.
