BarsaatRomantic mush versus murder on Friday
18th Aug 2005  20.50 IST
By Nitika Desai

Two films with very contrasting themes and storylines will hit the theatres on Friday, August 19.

One is the story of a man caught between two beautiful women. The other is about a man who accidentally kills his wife.

Suneel Darshan’s Barsaat falls into the mainstream category with its mushy story – a love triangle adorned with ample songs, some of them quite hot.

Barsaat has Bobby Deol playing an ambitious guy Arav, who leaves his home to look for better prospects abroad. Bipasha Basu plays Anna, a modern girl born and brought up in South Africa. Priyanka Chopra plays Kajal, a homely girl born and brought up in India.

As the movie’s story goes, the two women are in love with Arav. But he has to choose between one of them. Whom will he choose?

While Barsaat sounds more like yet another predictable fare from the Darshan camp, it is Ram Gopal Varma produced My Wife’s Murder that arouses more curiosity.

The movie, starring Anil Kapoor , Nandana Sen and Suchitra Krishnamurthy, marks the directorial debut of newcomer Jijy Philip.

In Varma’s words, ‘My Wife’s Murder’ is a film that is at once a thriller and a tragic story.

“I think the film will shock and surprise. It certainly gives Anil Kapoor a new image,” Varma is quoted as saying.

The film has Kapoor playing a man who accidentally ends up killing his wife.

“The film tries to portray the mind of an accidental murderer and never plays hide and seek with the audience,” Varma told a news agency.

Director Philip said making the movie was a big challenge. He said he and the movie’s scriptwriter worked for six months to improvise the script. The film is the 12th draft of the original script.

With the battlelines drawn for the Friday clash, it appears that ‘My Wife’s Murder’ has an upper hand over Barsaat due to its novel theme and unusual story. Barsaat, on the other hand, may take a good opening, but it might slide down at the box-office within days because of its predictable, love-and-sob story.
