The Hidden Hand in 'Mangal Pandey'

The Aamir Khan starrer ‘Mangal Pandey - The Rising ‘ may be doing superb business in theatres, but there is one fact about the movie not many are aware of.

Few are aware that the film was re-edited by Aditya Chopra jointly with Aamir. That is one of the main reasons for the delayed release of the movie, which was to have come in June.

Aditya’s company holds the all-India distribution rights of the historical directed by Ketan Mehta and is also the distributor of the Hindi and English versions in part of the Overseas circuit (USA and UK).

What made Aditya's entry into the editing scene easy was the fact that that the film had turned out to be too long and boring in parts. Also, since Aamir plays the hero in Yash Chopra and Aditya’s 'Fanaah', to be directed by Kunal Kohli , it didn't take long for Aditya to fine tune the film estimated to have cost about 32 crores .

Meanwhile, the film faced rough weather from number of sources in the beginning but fortunately has been able to defy all the challenges and appears to be on a victorious ride.

As things stand today, 'Mangal Pandey' has literally done a 'halla-bol' at the ticket window, especially the windows that open from the multiplexes.

The movie has enjoyed great returns due to four days weekend, generally good reviews and some positive word of mouth that has ensured that some stray comments from a few corners have not really impacted the business of the movie.

With increased number of shows and hike in admission tickets rates, a 15 crore gross seems to be passé while the final calculations may take the movie to a 20 crore mark too, hence breaking the record of Veer Zaara .
