No more girlfriend roles for Tara Sharma

Model-turned-actor Tara Sharma would rather be known as a ‘serious actress’ than just ‘another pretty face’ in Bollywood.

She has played “the pretty girlfriend of the hero” in big budget multistarrers like Anupam Kher's Om Jai Jagdish and Indra Kumar's Masti as well as in Mahesh Bhatt's Saaya.

“As a newcomer in the film industry from a non-film background, the only roles offered to you in big-budget commercial films are those of the hero's pretty girlfriend or wife. However, having already done quite of few of such roles, I am now very careful and want to do only performance oriented roles. No more girlfriend roles for me,” Tara told a news agency in an interview in New Delhi.

Fortunately for Tara, the huge success and acclaim for Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3 has established her as an actress who can carry off even complex roles.

“A film is like a plane. If it takes off well, it brings success to everyone associated with it. So, though in 'Page 3', the focus was on Konkana Sen , my character in the film was also noticed. Consequently, today I am getting a lot of performance-oriented roles where the emphasis will be on my acting skills rather than just my face and body,” Tara said.

With films like Mahesh Manjrekar's Amavas , Khosla Ka Ghosla and Partho Ghosh's Sitam in her kitty, this graduate from the London School of Economics (LSE) hopes to show that there is more to her than just a 'pretty face'.

Among the other films on the anvil for Tara are Shyam Bajaj's Aksar being directed by Ananth Mahadevan, Nabhi Kumar Raju's 'Bombay Unisex Saloon' and 'Shortcut', an experimental film which stars her alongside Rahul Bose .
