Sonali Kulkarni plays a rebel

Often seen relegated to the margins, Sonali Kulkarni plays a rebel in her forthcoming movie Dansh .

Dansh, meaning Sting, is the first-ever Hindi film to be made in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram, affected by militancy in the 1980s. The film has actor Kay Kay Menon playing the spokesperson of Mizo National Front (MNF).

Sonali plays Menon’s wife and a former Mizo militant who was raped by soldiers during the insurgency.

The movie premiered at the 7th Osian Cinefan Film Festival in New Delhi in July and got a heartening response from the crowd.

Sonali says she did not do any research nor did she meet any real guerrillas to prepare for her role in the movie. She says she “empathized” with her character and played it.

Although Sonali is unsure how the mainstream audience would lap the movie, she is certain that the film would certainly make an impact with a selected group of viewers because of its fresh theme.

Sonali, who was seen in a wee bit role in Bride and Prejudice and a marginal one in Dil Chahta Hai , says she may not have made it to the big league in Bollywood, but she definitely has won praise for her acting performances so far.

Apart from Dansh, she is also awaiting Makrand Deshpande’s Hannan in which she is cast with Manoj Bajpai .

She would also be seen in the Italian movie ‘Fire At My Heart’, in which she is cast opposite Italian actor Massi Mili.
