Former Miss World Priyanka Chopra has never been averse to taking up unconventional roles. She is already starring in the sequel of Koi Mil Gaya and the remakes of ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’ and Don .
And now reports are that Kalpana Lazmi has zeroed in on Priyanka for her next film. Lazmi has also chosen Rekha for a pivotal role in the film.
What’s interesting, however, is that both Priyanka and Rekha could be playing daringly different roles – that of devdasis in the 19th and 20th centuries, and will share a teacher-protégé relationship in the film.
The choice of roles is interesting because of the way devdasis were treated in those times. Apparently, though they were meant to be women who had pledged to spend their lives in the service of God, many of them actually ended up as prostitutes and courtesans to the royalty. What’s more, the female children they bore were once again offered to the temple as future devdasis.
Rekha has already enacted the role of a teacher in ‘Kamasutra’ and will be once again playing guru to shishya Priyanka.
However, neither of the actresses has signed the film, though according to Lazmi, both Rekha and Priyanka have given their approvals in principal after hearing the story and are very upbeat about the film.
Lazmi adds that the project would be a commercial mainstream film and she is looking for a male lead right now.
