Salaam Namaste: Living life on one’s own terms

Actress Preity Zinta says her movie Salaam Namaste is about two people who choose to live life on their own terms.

The film, starring Saif Ali Khan and Preity in the lead roles, is shot in Melbourne. Saif plays a chef in the movie, while Preity plays a radio jockey.

The film tells the story of these two people with very contrasting personalities. Nick (Saif) is a laidback man who sleeps the mornings and takes life in his own stride. Ambar (Preity) is a vivacious RJ for a programme called Salaam Namaste in which she interviews famous Indians settled in Australia.

The two get to know each other after Nick fails to turn up for his scheduled interview with Ambar and she decides to teach him a lesson in punctuality. After an initial spat, the two become friends and start living in the same apartment.

Speaking about the movie in an interview, Preity said: “Salaam Namaste is very contemporary. It's about a generation that says, 'This is my life and I want to live it the way I want to’.”

But isn’t the theme of two unmarried people in a live-in relationship a bit bold or rather unusual for our cine audience.

“India is absolutely ready for a film on live-in relationships,” says Preity, adding that she personally knows people in India who are in such a relationship.

One highlight of the movie is Preity’s dresses that have been designed especially by young designer Surily Goel. It happened that Surily actually made a trip to Australia and bought dresses that were in vogue there. One dress that has caught many an eye is the red halter-neck top and mini-skirt that Preity wears in the movie’s title song.

To promote the movie, Preity has actually turned RJ for Radio Mirchi for a breakfast show that has been aired across all the Radio Mirchi stations for the last few days in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

Salaam Namaste is Siddharth Raj Anand’s directorial debut. He has assisted Kunal Kohli during the making of Hum Tum . Anand believes that Salaam Namaste will get a good response from the youth.

The movie releases on September 9.
