HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Diwali Dhamaka: Bollywood and Downsouth30th Oct 2005 21.10 IST By Nitika Desai and P. Sreekumaran The Bollywood platter is adorned with comic and romantic celluloid offerings for the Diwali week. In the south, too, many movies would hit the marquee around the festival of lights. The two previous weeks in Bollywood without any significant release was a lull before the storm. The lull now being over, the storm is in the offing.
Three Hindi movies would release in the coming days – two of them comedies, and one a sensitive romantic tale. Tickling the funny bone would be Priyadarshan’s Garam Masala and David Dhawan’s Shaadi No. 1. Garam Masala is the story of two men – John Abraham and Akshay Kumar – caught in hilarious situations. Akshay plays a flirt who goes around with as many as three airhostesses at the same time. John plays a luckless photographer and Akshay’s friend-turned-foe who gets embroiled in one unfortunate incident after another. The movie also introduces three new girls – Daisy Bopanna , Neetu Chandran and Nargis . Shaadi No. 1 , on the other hand, is a comedy revolving around three couples – Fardeen Khan - Ayesha Takia , Zayed Khan - Esha Deol and Sharman Joshi - Soha Ali Khan . The humour in the movie centers around the three men indulging in infidelity by cheating on their spouses. And amid all this laughter, there will be touching romance featuring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Priyadarshan’s Kyon Ki . Kyon Ki has Salman playing a traumatized patient, while Kareena plays the doctor who falls in love with him while nursing him. Rimi Sen plays Salman’s love interest who he is accused of killing. While this Bollywood bonanza on Diwali-Eid promises entertainment galore, competition is no less stiff down south where several movies are vying to draw audiences to the theatres. It’s going to be a duel of sorts between Vijay’s Sivakasi and Vikram’s Majaa. On another front, actor-director Cheran’s Thavamani Thavamirunthu looks poised for giving competition to Dhanush’s Athu Oru Kanaa Kalam. Meanwhile, filmmaker Lohithdas has confirmed the postponement of his film Kasturiman to November 10. Majaa , starring Vikram and Asin , revolves round a father and his two sons, who are petty thieves. Asin plays a local chieftain’s daughter. The film is directed by Shafi. Sivakasi has Vijay playing a short-tempered guy who reaches Sivakasi from Chennai looking for a job. The story revolves around the mother-son relationship spiced up with sentimental and commercial ingredients. Asin plays Vijay’s love interest. Thavamani Thavamirunthu has Cheran turning the spotlight on parent-offspring relationship. The tensions of raising children and the duties of the offspring towards their parents form the theme of Thavamani Thavamirunthu. Athu Oru Kanaa Kalam signifies the comeback of talented cinematographer-cum-director Balu Mahendra after a long gap. The film has Rajnikant’s son-in-law Dhanush as the hero. Priya Mani plays the female lead. With so much on offer in Bollywood and downsouth, this Diwali is sure going to be swell of a cracker at the box-office.
