Aishwarya Rai , one of the most beautiful women in the world, turned a year older on Tuesday.

It is going to be double celebrations for this beauty queen this year as her birthday falls on the same day as the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali.

Ash, who has played a big role in making Bollywood a known name in the west, turns 32 today. And the radiance of her beauty and the sparkle in her smile seems to get better with each passing year.

Aishwarya’s rise to fame began in 1994 when she was adjudged Femina Miss India-World and later went on to make her country proud by winning the coveted Miss World tiara.

She began her acting career with a south Indian film titled ‘Iruvar’. In Bollywood, she came to everyone’s notice with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam for which she won the Filmfare and Zee Cine awards as Best Actress.

Ash subsequently proved wrong her detractors who claimed that she was just a beauty doll by growing as an actress with each film and showing her mettle in Bhansali’s Devdaas , which also took her to Cannes Film Festival in 2002. The next year, she became the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes.

Slowly and steadily, Ash came to the notice of the world. She was immortalized in a wax replica at the famous Madame Tussaud’s Museum in London. She also appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 2004 and was listed among the “100 Most Influential People in the World”.

Today, Ash has become a known name even in the US where Bollywood has been relatively less known. She has made appearances on ‘60 Minutes’, ‘David Letterman Show’ and the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’. And there are over 17,000 unofficial websites dedicated to her on the Internet.

Ash has just concluded the shooting of her first international movie ‘The Last Legion’ in which she plays a medieval warrior princess. Now, she is committed to her Bollywood projects.
