HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Meet Akbar Khan's Mumtaj Mahal17th Nov 2005 22.30 IST By Aparajita Ghosh Sonya Jehan , the grand daughter of the legendary singer-actress Noor Jehan, is making her Bollywood debut with Akbar Khan’s movie Taj Mahal . Sonya, half Pakistani and half French, is not like the other debutantes to have hit the Bollywood in the recent times. This graceful beauty is a married woman who doesn’t endorse the idea of exposing before the camera. 
Reports have it that Akbar Khan signed Sonya for the movie because the role of Mumtaj Mahal “required a fresh young face of a teenager who grows up to be a woman of exquisite grace.” Mumtaj Mahal was Shah Jahan’s wife in whose memory the great emperor built the Taj Mahal. Sonya says when she got a confirmation from Akbar Khan that she would be playing the coveted role in the movie, she saw the older movie versions of ‘Taj Mahal’ and also read related books and searched for relevant material on the internet. Sonya’s look of Mumtaj Mahal in the movie has been conceived and designed by Anna Singh. Sonya says when she wore the costumes and jewellery designed by Anna Singh, she in actual fact felt like a queen. So it was easy to slip into her role. ‘Taj Mahal’ also has a lovemaking scene between Sonya and the main actor Zulfi Syed . Sonya says her husband, a Delhi-based banker, is supportive of her decision to act in films. But the gorgeous lady says acting is not her primary aim. She is interested in reading books, particularly on child psychology. As for the lovemaking scene in the movie, Sonya says it was shot very aesthetically and there is nothing vulgar in it. ‘Taj Mahal’ is a magnum opus starring a host of actors including Sonya, Zulfi Syed, Arbaaz Khan , Manisha Koirala , Kim Sharma , Kabir Bedi and Pooja Batra . The film is slated to hit the theatres on November 18.
