2005 – The Year of the sequel and fatal crashes

The year 2005 saw sequels being made to popular films in Bollywood and one of the biggest heartthrobs of the nation escaping death.

Rakesh Roshan is making the sequel of his hit film Koi Mil Gaya with his son Hrithik Roshan and former Miss World Priyanka Chopra titled Krrish . It is expected to release early next year.

Shooting is on for the sequel of Sanjay Ghandvi's Dhoom , titled 'Dhoom II' under the banner of Yashraj Films .

'Dhoom II' is already generating tremendous interest as apart from Abhishek Bachchan , Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra it stars Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik in their first ever negative roles.

Ram Gopal Varma has also announced a sequel to his film Sarkar , which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek.

Apart from that, Varma is also making his version of the legendary classic Sholay .

2005 witnessed the success of India's animation film 'Hanuman' which is likely to pave the way for more such ventures from India in the future.

However, another animation venture Bhaggmati - The Queen of Fortunes failed to make a mark.

This year about 75 Marathi films were released. The number was extremely high compared to previous years and the reason was the critical acclaim received by Shwaas , which was India's official entry to Oscars in the foreign film category.

Among the successful Marathi films this year were Nishikant Kamat's 'Dombivali Fast', Sachin's 'Navra Maza Navsacha', Mahesh Kothare's 'Khabardar', Kedar Shinde's 'Jatra', Bipin Nadkarni's 'Uttarayan'. 'Pak Pak Pakak', starring Nana Patekar , was critically acclaimed at the Singapore Film Festival and child actor Saksham Kulkarni won an award.

Actor-turned-MP Govinda was in news in August when his family members met with a near fatal accident near Jaipur, which claimed his secretary's life.

In October, Hrithik survived a near fatal accident while shooting a stunt for his father's film ‘Krrish’ in Singapore.

Hrithik had a miraculous escape from death when he fell from a 50 ft high building to the ground while shooting.

In a scene Hrithik was to jump from the building with "safety cable" tied to his leg but as the actor tried the stunt the cable broke and he came crashing down.

However, Hrithik landed safely on a net placed below as a precautionary measure.

And the whole nation heaved a sigh of relief when Amitabh was discharged from the Lilavati hospital on December 17.

In 2005, the industry lost several veterans like actors Amrish Puri , Parveen Babi and Sunil Dutt as well as filmmakers like Harmesh Malhotra and Ramanand Sagar.
