Actor Anupam Kher is boycotting the Screen Awards function this year.
Miffed by the nomination of veteran director Jahnu Barua in the ‘Debut Film’ category for the film Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara , the movie's lead actor and producer Anupam Kher and Barua have decided to voice their protest by boycotting the Screen Awards function.
“It is not fair that an acclaimed director like Jahnu Barua should be nominated in the debut director category. He has won numerous awards, has been applauded internationally, how can he be clubbed with first time directors?” Kher is quoted by a news agency as saying.
“The organisers claim that this is his first Hindi film, but that also is not true. He has directed a Hindi film before this. That is the reason we have decided not to attend the ceremony. But that does not mean I am cutting off all ties with ‘Screen’. In fact I have a long-standing relationship with them,” he added.
Kher has also sent a message to the organisers of the awards ceremony, which is to be held on January 11, voicing his protest.
