The movie, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra , has caught the fancy of movie buffs not just in India, but also in the US, UK, Australia and in the Gulf. People of Asian origin, particularly the NRIs, are reported to be thronging the theatres to watch the film that has got rave reviews from critics. 
Theatres in New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, London and Birmingham are reported to be going full. In the US, the movie opened at 23rd position on the charts and raked in a decent sum of $701,666 in its weekend run at 61 screens. In the UK, the movie debuted at No. 13 position and collected £221,226 on 38 screens. The movie's performance at Australian box-office, Singapore box-office and Gulf box-office too has been much better than that of any other Bollywood film in the recent years. Shiraz Jivani, who owns Naz 8 Cinemas in California, is quoted as saying: "So many people are coming for Rang De Basanti and coming back for the next show." According to estimates, close to one lakh people have watched RDB in North America in the opening weekend. And there are many who are coming to see the movie again. According to the movie's distributors UTV, the overseas gross earning of the film in the three-day weekend is about $5.7 million. 'Rang De Basanti' has turned out to be biggest Aamir Khan opening movie abroad, even surpassing Mangal Pandey The Rising . And the movie's distributors are certain that the film will enjoy a long good run at the marquee. Besides Aamir, the movie stars British actress Alice Patten , Madhavan , Soha Ali Khan , Kunal Kapoor , Siddharth , Sharman Joshi , Atul Kulkarni and Kiron Kher .
