Meet Onjolee Nair – The 'Holiday' debutante

Onjolee Nair , the heroine of Pooja Bhatt’s latest movie Holiday , is a girl of many talents.

In the three movies Pooja Bhatt has made so far, she has introduced new female faces. Pooja’s directorial debut Paap was the launchpad for Udita Goswami and her production venture Rog (directed by Himanshu Brahmbhatt) introduced south African model Ilene Hamman to Bollywood.

And now, ‘Holiday’ marks the acting debut of Onjolee Nair, who was doing her graduation from Jai Hind College before she was signed for the role of a simple girl who transforms into a dancer in Pooja’s latest movie.

In the film, Onjolee plays a 19-year-old college girl Muskaan who is low on confidence and doesn’t find acceptance among her own family and friends because she is poor in academics. Her character undergoes a transformation after she meets a dance instructor (played by Dino Morea ) during a holiday in Goa. It is through dance Muskaan realizes her self worth and finds a new direction in her otherwise bland life.

Quite interestingly, Onjolee was not Pooja’s first choice to play Muskaan in the film. Before Onjolee, Pooja had signed a girl named Smiley and even shot for a few days with her. But Smiley did not live upto Pooja’s expectations and it was then Onjolee, who had already auditioned for the movie, got a call.

Another thing that worked in Onjolee’s favour was that she is trained in ballet, salsa and kathak dance forms.

However, the first half of the movie did not require Onjolee to show her dance skills. On the contrary, she was supposed to be clumsy-footed and had to shed her agility. But the latter half of the movie was where the challenge lay for Onjolee. She and Dino had to learn Latin-American dancing for their scenes.

‘Holiday’ releases on February 10.
