Looks like Pakistan is finally opening its doors to Indian films, although very cautiously.
After giving a clean chit for the release of Sohni Mahiwal and the censored version of Mughal-e Azam, the Pakistani government is learnt to have approved in principle the exhibition of filmmaker Akbar Khan’s latest movie Taj Mahal .
The movie stars Sonya Jehan of Pakistani origin playing the lead role of Mumtaz Mahal, while Indian actor Zulfi Syed plays the emperor Shah Jahan.
A report quotes Akbar Khan as saying that he is very elated at the development and sees it as a “new beginning” that opens the doors of a new territory for Indian filmmakers.
Khan says he hasn’t yet drawn any strategy for the film’s distribution in Pakistan, but he wants to ensure a proper release of the movie there. He is also said to be thinking of having a lavish premiere of the movie in one of the major cities of Pakistan.
Made at an estimated mammoth budget of Rs 70 crores, ‘Taj Mahal’ tries to authentically recreate the Mughal era through opulent sets, royal costumes and jewellery. The film narrates an age-old story of love between emperor Shahjahan and Mumtaj Mahal. It also depicts the greed of Aurangzeb.
The movie, released last year in India was a debacle at the box-office.
