A bhangra number by Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee and a classic performance by Aishwarya Rai marked the closing of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Sunday.

Indian capital New Delhi will host the next Commonwealth Games in 2010. As the tradition has it, the future host of CW games gets to present a cultural show at the closing ceremony.

And so it was Bollywood at the centre-stage at the closing ceremony Down Under on Sunday. A host of stars and singers including Aishwarya, Rani, Saif, Lara Dutta , Priyanka Chopra , Isha Sharvani , Sonu Nigam , Shiamak Davar , Shreya Ghosal and Sunidhi Chauhan performed during the half hour glittering show put up by India.

Dressed in a resplendent golden dress, Aishwarya performed a classical dance number along with a troupe of dancers.

Saif and Rani charged up the atmosphere with their Bhangra number Dilli Mein Dhamaal, sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Gayatri and written by Javed Akhtar. Saif was dressed like a Punjabi jatt in a green outfit, while Rani looked stunning in gaudy red attire.

Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra accompanied a contingent of Indian athletes and sportsmen.

And singers Sonu Nigam, Sherya Ghosal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shiamak Davar sang Dilli Chalo. The song was predominantly in English with a few Hindi words thrown in the edgeways.

There was also a dance recital by choreographer Shiamak Davar’s troupe.

All in all, the entire show went extremely well and the stadium reverberated with huge applause after the performance.
