HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD 'Water' united Deepa Mehta with estranged daughter12th May 2006 19.30 IST By Agencies India-born director Deepa Mehta says her film Water brought her close to her daughter from whom she had been estranged for almost a decade. It was Mehta's moving script for "Water" which brought her daughter Devyani close to her after she joined her mother's crew in 2000, the Toronto-based film director has said in an interview.
"You know daughter-mother relationships are really so weird-and wonderful...both the film and reconciliation that resulted from it (the film) proved to be about the power of making something that's broken whole," Mehta told the "Boston Globe' in an interview. Mehta married Toronto-born filmmaker Paul Saltzman in 1973 but they broke up when Mehta's first feature 'Sam and Me' was being screened at Cannes in 1991. Devyani, then 11, chose to live with her father. She joined Mehta's film crew after they were estranged for almost eight years. "The reason I was there and the reason everyone pretty much was there was that I loved the story, about women searching for freedom," Devyani said of 'Water'. "The film was our second chance as mother and daughter," she said. Devyani has also penned the book "Shooting Water" that fuses the troubles faced by Mehta while shooting in India and their reconciliation. Mehta's next project is tentatively called ‘Exclusion’ based on a 1914 incident in which Indian political refugees were denied entry into Canada.
