While actors portray the depth and emotion of the characters they play on screen, it is in the hands of the directors to bring out the required emotions to make the scene look convincing. 
And J.P. Dutta is a master at bringing out the acting credentials of artists to the fore. And while directing ‘Umrao Jaan’, Dutta had the task of making Ash understand the grief and sorrow of the courtesan of Lucknow. A prominent website tells how Dutta explained his Umrao Jaan to Ash: “My Umrao is Ameeran, the girl child. Ameeran was her name before she was abducted and sold to the dancing house. So, think of her as a woman with a tear in her eye and a smile on her face.” Now it remains to be seen how Ash portrays the grief and sorrow of Umrao Jaan with a tear in her eye and a smile on her face – an act played superbly by the enigmatic Rekha in the 1981 classic.
