'Omkara' goes to Cannes

The main stars and the director of Omkara are headed for the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

Ajay Devgan , Saif Ali Khan , Vivek Oberoi , Bipasha Basu , the movie’s director Vishal Bhardwaj and producer Kumar Mangat are leaving for the most prestigious event in the world of movies.

They are expected to reach Cannes, in France, on May 19.

On the following day, May 20, the stars, the director and the producer of ‘Omkara’ will launch a coffee table book on the making of the film.

The film, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, has been shot in various small towns of India. Bhardwaj managed to shoot the film in crowded market places, on the streets and in imambaras despite the presence of big stars who attract huge crowds.

After the book launch on May 20 at Cannes, the team would hold a press conference aboard a boat on the Palais. In the conference, the stars and the movie’s makers will speak about the film and their experiences of working in it. They would also answer questions from the international media including Variety and Screen.

The day will close for the ‘Omkara’ team with a Cocktail party on the Nikki beach.

Among the actors of ‘Omkara’, only Kareena Kapoor will not be able to make it to the event because she is busy with Rockstars concert in the US.

‘Omkara’ has Ajay Devgan playing the protagonist Omkara, the leader of a gang of outlaws. Saif Ali Khan plays Langda Tyagi, a shrewd and scheming man in Omi’s gang. Vivek Oberoi plays Kesu, another gang member.

The story takes off when Omi appoints Kesu, and not Langda Tyagi, as his trusted lieutenant. His ego rattled and his pride hurt, Langda Tyagi weaves a plan in which he begins to create a rift between Omi and Kesu by slowly poisoning Omi’s mind with tales of a romantic affair between Kesu and Omi’s beloved Dolly (Kareena Kapoor).

Jealousy and envy take the better of Omi and, blinded by obsession, he eventually ends up destroying his own world.

‘Omkara’ is likely to release in India on July 28.
