Ash, Preity at Cannes : Indian touch missing!

Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta ’s dressing sense at the Cannes Film Festival was too western and had no Indian-ness.

When an Indian celebrity wears an ethnic Indian outfit at an international event, he or she can make heads turn around, according to designer Reena Dhaka. Reena says Ash and Preity’s dresses at Cannes were eye pleasing, but they did not stand out in the crowd of similar dresses. Reena wished the two actresses had worn something Indian.

At the Cannes fest, Aishwarya was seen in the first few days in western outfits only – be it a black Armani gown or a dark blue Roberto Cavalli creation.

Preity Zinta, on the other hand, was seen in no less western clothes – a black cocktail dress and a golden frock-like outfit.

Indian-ness was conspicuously missing in the dressing sense of the two actresses. Ash even struck a namaste pose for the photographers in a very western style. And, of course, her highly accentuated English makes one doubt whether she is an Indian at all.

A newspaper quotes author and socialite Shobha De as expressing her disappointment at Ash and Preity’s dressing sense.

“It is disaster, disaster, disaster. When India is the international flavour, why are our girls dressing like Marys off to church? Even if it is fusion wear, they should be showcasing our brilliant crafts,” Shobha De is quoted.

Fashion designer Manav Gangwani agrees that an Indian dress – be it a sari or a lehenga – would have attracted much more attention for Preity and Ash at Cannes.

“An Indian outfit would have catapulted them right ahead of the other international stars dressed in near identical evening gowns,” a report quotes Manav as saying.

That reminds us of Nandita Das who was seen in resplendent saris at the festival last year. Even the hot Mallika Sherawat had opted for a golden lehenga with a tiny top. The two damsels had caught ample attention at the fest last year.
