Reports have it that Italian actress Monica Bellucci has agreed to play the role of Sonia Gandhi in filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra ’s movie on the leader.
The film, based on Rasheed Kidwai’s book ‘Sonia – A Biography’, will trace the life of the Congress leader from a small Italian town to India after her marriage, from her distancing herself from politics to her emerging as the leader of the party that presently runs the world’s largest democracy, India.
For a long time Mundhra has been pursuing Bellucci to play the role in his movie because of the Italian actress’s remarkable facial resemblance to Sonia Gandhi. In between, Mundhra even thought of signing Preity Zinta or Aishwarya Rai for the role.
But at the Cannes Film Festival, Mundhra met Monica and the two discussed the project. Monica is said to have given her nod to the project.
The film, to be made in English, will complete the trilogy of Mundhra’s films on strong female characters. He has already made ‘Bawandar’ (The Sandstorm) with Nandita Das and soon-to-be-released Provoked with Aishwarya Rai .
However, Mundhra will not get busy with Sonia Gandhi’s biographical film right away. He will first make a film titled ‘Shoot At Sight’ for which he wants Amitabh Bachchan to play the lead role.
