HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD 'Fanaa' director asks for the film’s release in Gujarat06th June 2006 15.10 IST Kunal Kohli is urging the exhibitors in Gujarat to screen his latest movie Fanaa . On Monday, while the Supreme Court turned down director Mahesh Bhatt's PIL regarding the film’s release in Gujarat, the honorable court did remark that the exhibitors can ask for protection from the state government to release the film.
Following this ruling, the movie’s director Kunal Kohli held a news conference in which he asked exhibitors in Gujarat who wish to screen the film to request for protection from the State Government. The association of multiplex owners in Gujarat had opted not to release the film in the state after certain remarks by its star Aamir Khan about the rehabilitation of people affected by Narmada dam did not go well with certain sections of people in Gujarat. Addressing the conference, Kunal Kohli said: "Now, we as filmmakers request all theatre owners of Gujarat, request everybody to come forward and release the film. We have earned 47 crores (both domestic and overseas) in the first week and have lost approximately six to seven crore of business in Gujarat.” “However, it's not about money... it is about principle. As a democratic country where Aamir has right to say, even the people of Gujarat who is protesting have right to say.... but in a democratic fashion and not by burning posters and threatening people," Kunal added. Kunal also said that piracy had increased due to the ban in Gujarat.
