Phir Hera Pheri : Humour overdose dilutes the impact

An overt attempt to stuff every single scene with humour takes the punch away from Phir Hera Pheri .

The movie’s director Neeraj Vora , himself a comedian and a dialogue writer, has gone overboard in making sure that every scene and sequence in the film has something comical to offer to the viewers. The result is a stodgy, overblown comedy that works well in some parts but falls flat in others.

The subtle art of exercising restraint is the secret of a good comedy film. It is this skill that makes for the deftness of polished filmmakers like Priyadarshan , Kundan Shah and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who have given the best comedy films to Hindi cinema.

But in his zealousness to fully entertain the viewers, Neeraj Vora crams up the film with one gag after another. Coming in quick succession, even the good gags get lost in the barrage of average jokes. And this overdose of humour dilutes the impact and takes the zing away from the film.

Add to this the over-casting in the film. Many characters seem forcibly squeezed into the narrative to enhance the commotion and confusion. Milind Gunaji , Johnny Lever and other characters like Bipasha’s niece, the rich Parsi, have little to do with the main plot.

On top of it, the comedy at the movie’s end, when all the greedy people come together at the Royal Circus, is very childish. The guerilla sequence was absolutely unnecessary.

So the big question is, does ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ make for an entertaining sequel to Hera-Pheri ?

To some extent yes, but the credit for this goes to the performances by Paresh Rawal , Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty . Had Neeraj Vora been subtler and not overstuffed his film, ‘Phir Hera Pheri’ could have been one hell of a roller-coaster ride.
