Krrish : When Hrithik escaped death by narrow margin

Hrithik Roshan pushed his physical and mental limits to play the superhero character in this Friday’s release Krrish .

The film, a first of its kind for Indian cinema, has Hrithik playing a masked superhero who skids in the air, jumps from dizzy heights and somersaults up against the gravity with nimble ease. Hrithik’s character Krrish in the film has special powers inherited from his father (Rohit in Koi Mil Gaya ) who was given these powers by an alien.

Since the movie required Hrithik to do dangerous stunts, the actor took a month long training under Chinese trainer Tony Ching Siu Tung, who has done stunts for films like ‘The Hero’, ‘House of Flying Daggers’' (both by Zhang Yimou) and 'Kill Bill'.

Even during the strenuous training, Hrithik sprained his hand and twisted his ankle. But his physical strength was to be tested during the film’s shooting.

In June last year, while shooting for a circus scene, Hrithik pulled his hamstring. His hair also got singed in a fire sequence. But this was nothing compared to the stunt that went tragically wrong and might have cost Hrithik his life.

It happened in Singapore in October when Hrithik was shooting for a scene in which he jumps from a building more than 50 ft high. For safety reasons Hrithik was harnessed to a cable. But as the actor tried the stunt the cable broke and he came crashing down. Fortunately, Hrithik landed on a net placed below as a precautionary measure.

Although the accident sprained his neck and pulled a muscle in his back, Hrithik did not let fear sink in.

“I just didn't let the fear set in. After I came down I decided to go up on the wires almost immediately and stop fear in its tracks,” says the actor.

The result of all this hard work, all the sweat and blood, is visible on the screen. So far, a selected few who have seen the film have hailed Hrithik’s stunts in it.

Karan Johar has gone on to say that Hrithik is the only actor in Hindi film industry who can play a superhero so convincingly.

Well, we’ll see it on Friday when the movie hits the theatres.

The film, directed by Rakesh Roshan , has Priyanka Chopra playing Hrithik’s love interest. Naseeruddin Shah plays the villain, a megalomaniac scientist.
