Rang De BasantiBollywood half-yearly report : Many reasons to cheer

The first six months of year 2006 have been more than reasonably good for the Hindi film industry.

The first half of the year has seen some path-breaking films, some crazy comedies and some gritty thrillers. It saw an interesting fusion of the elements of art and commercial cinema, both enmeshed in an entertaining, thought-provoking way.

It goes without saying that Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's movie Rang De Basanti is the most outstanding film of the year so far. Not only did the film not conform to any Bollywood stereotype, it presented a thought-provoking story in a novel, innovative way, with a beautifully crafted screenplay that runs to and fro in time to draw parallels between the freedom fighters of the British-ruled India with the youths of today.

'Rang De Basanti' had a colourful star cast, with actors from North and South India, and also a Briton, Alice Patten , playing the female lead opposite our endearing Aamir Khan .

In a way, it can be safely said that the first six months of the year belonged to Aamir. After 'Rang De Basanti' in January, it was Fanaa (in May), that set the cash registers ringing at the box-office. Although the film got a mixed response from the critics, the moviegoers in India and abroad (particularly in the UK) liked the film immensely.

'Fanaa' also marked the return of Kajol to the big screen after a long gap of many years. Playing the blind Kashmiri girl in the film, Kajol showed she still hasn't lost an iota of her beauty and acting talent ever since she shut the door to tinsel town after her marriage with Ajay Devgan.

Besides these two big blockbusters, Hrithik Roshan 's Krrish has given the distributors many a reason to cheer. The film, a first of its kind for Hindi cinema, has Hrithik playing a superhero character who does incredible stunts and fights a mad-cap scientist to save his father. The most remarkable thing about this film is the way it combines the action with romance and the emotional turmoil of its protagonist Krrish. The film, released in June, is still raking it in at the box-office, at home and abroad.

The first half of 2006 also saw two successful comedy films. Priyadarshan's Malamaal Weekly turned out to be a wholesome entertainer with yet another stellar performance from Paresh Rawal . Rawal was in his form again in Neeraj Vora's Phir Hera Pheri , a roller-coaster laugh riot about the adventures of Baburao, Raju and Shyam, who venture out to become richer than rich, and, in the process, only end up back to the footpath.

Among the thrillers, the movies that stood out were Abbas Mastan's 36 China Town and Sanjay Gupta's Zinda . Both films did above average business at the turnstiles.

Another film that made its mark was Taxi Number 9211 , which tackled the theme of male bonding (or rather the lack of it) through the story of two mutually incompatible characters played by John Abraham and Nana Patekar .

Summing up, the first six months of 2006 have been much better compared to that of the recent few years in the Hindi film industry. And the remaining months will see some big movies hitting the screen - Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara , Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Farhan Akhtar's Don , to name a few.

Well, Bollywood has never been better.
