Saif fell back to his roots for 'Omkara'

Saif Ali Khan says he had to prepare very meticulously for his role in Vishal Bhardwaj’s film Omkara .

Not many are aware that Saif’s paternal hometown is Pataudi in Haryana and his mother’s hometown is Bhopal. So when Saif began preparing for his rustic character, Langda Tyagi, in ‘Omkara’, the actor went back to his roots to learn the language and mannerisms of the people in rural and small-town India.

In an IANS interview, Saif said he agreed to do ‘Omkara’ “because of the language and script.”

Saif said he wanted to prove wrong his detractors who think he can only play the rich pampered boy and cannot carry off the stark rustic roles.

But, in the same breath, the actor admitted that his role in ‘Omkara’ was a challenge. And to understand the language and mannerisms of rustic people, the actor fell back to his roots.

“When I spend time in my father's hometown Pataudi or my mother's city Bhopal, I have noticed that their language is similar to what I had to say in ‘Omkara’. I just fell back on my roots,” Saif is quoted as saying.

Saif said that in order to get the lingo right, the movie’s director Vishal Bhardwaj even taped the dialogues in a rustic accent.

“He taped the dialogues. I remember jogging in Switzerland while listening to dialogues on my walkman,” Saif is quoted.

‘Omkara’ has Saif playing an evil, scheming character Langda Tyagi, who creates jealousy in the mind of Omkara ( Ajay Devgan ), an outlaw, that his wife ( Kareena Kapoor ) is having an illicit affair with Kesu ( Vivek Oberoi ), Omkara’s trusted lieutenant.

The film, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, will release on July 28.
