Deoshi In this Friday’s release Omkara , Saif Ali Khan plays a shrewd, conniving and repulsive character whom many would love to hate. His devious look, limping gait, yellowed teeth, rustic lingo, sweaty skin and wily grin – all verily befit the scheming character on the lines of Iago from Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. Yet Saif’s co-stars in Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie find his role a coveted one. 
Langda Tyagi (Saif) in the film is subtly devilish to his bones and marrow. He poisons the mind of the movie’s protagonist Omkara ( Ajay Devgan ) that his wife Dolly ( Kareena Kapoor ) is having a secret affair with Kesu ( Vivek Oberoi ), Omi’s second-in-command. And in doing this, Tyagi not only creates a rift between Omi and Kesu, but also proves his allegiance and loyalty to Omi, the chief of outlaws. Although Devgan plays the title role in the film, he says he liked Saif’s character in the film better. “I liked my character, but liked Saif's Iago better because it has a lot of shades,” Devgan is quoted as saying. And come to think of it, Saif was hesitant in taking the role first. It took a little convincing on the part of Vishal Bhardwaj to get Saif to make up his mind to play the cunning character with short hair, rural accent, green clothes (symbolic of envy) and rugged facial features. Saif says it was a role that required careful preparation. “Unlike other roles in which you put on the right costumes and learn your dialogues before shooting, this role (of Langda Tyagi) required tough preparation. I had to get into the mind of the character, learn his language, his mannerisms before I could shoot,” Saif says. In fact, Vishal Bhardwaj got Saif’s dialogues recorded by someone else in a rustic accent and then gave the audiotape to the actor to memorize them by heart.
