HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD What Irfaan Khan doesn't like about Bollywood films28th July 2006 20.31 IST By ApunKaChoice Bureau He may have carved a niche for himself in Bollywood, but Irfaan Khan isn’t happy about everything in the Indian film industry. According to Irfaan, nowadays actors and stars and not storyline is more important in Bollywood films.
"Unfortunately, in our country actors are given more importance than the storyline of the film. Instead of paying attention to the subject, the directors focus more on which stars to rope in their film," Irfaan told a news agency. Irfaan is of the view that actors can deliver goods only when their directors push them real hard - hard enough to give their best. "Actors are basically very lazy people. They do not want to work. They have to be pushed everytime. Only then, do they do their work. Great performances do not come so easily," he said. As he gets talking about his career in theatre, television and now films, Irfaan, who is today one of the most sought-after actors, disagrees with the concept of a "method actor". "There is no such thing as a 'method actor'. Every actor creates his own method to a particular character that he does. The same method does not apply to all actors and all characters. I might do a role in a particular way, someone else might choose some other." Irfaan is all smiles these days as two of his projects -- Naseeruddin Shah 's Yun Hota To Kya Hota and Mukesh Bhatt 's The Killer -- were simultaneously released the past week. He explained the "variety" of films in his career rather earnestly. "I need to survive after all. 'Yun Hota..' is a milestone in my career. But you don't get many films like that. I want to reach out to a wider audience." "I have done films like 'Gunaah' purely for the masses. There are times when we do films just for creative satisfaction and there are times, when we just entertain people. After all, box-office success is also important to me," said the man, whose co-actors and directors swear by his talent. Recounting his experience with Naseeruddin Shah in his maiden directorial flick, Irfaan said he had to wait for ten long years to get an offer from the acting stalwart. "From the time I started doing theatre, everytime I would act, I would wonder that how would Naseer react to a performance like that. He is an inspiration for all. And yes, he is far more relaxed and cool as a director than when he is acting. I want to see him behind the camera more often now." There seemed to be a mutual admiration society between the two as Naseer felt Irfaan is "one of the finest actors" of his generation, who believes the strength of a film lies in teamwork. Irfaan elaborated, "I hate it when people try to pit two actors together. Whenever I do multistarrers, people ask me how will I handle the pressure. I believe that we are all playing certain characters in the film and should just concentrate on that instead of thinking of ways of outdoing others." Irfaan has an interesting line-up with films like Mira Nair 's 'Namesake', 'Deadline' and 'Laxman Rekha' due for release this year. "I look for stories where I can preserve the experiences of enacting them. I like to play characters that help me learn something. A long as, I keep getting interesting work, it does not matter whether I get small banners or big," he said.
