HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar : Review04th Aug 2006 21.40 IST By Aparajita Ghosh Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty starrer Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar is based on a story that’s been beaten to death in Indian cinema. A liberal minded, career oriented girl gets married in a household that is somewhat traditional and orthodox. The tiffs between saas and bahu follow. The husband and wife fail to see things eye to eye and begin bickering over small, trivial matters. Then there is a tragedy and a final bid to make the marriage work.
As if the saas-bahu operas on the small screen were not tiring enough that we are subject to a similar story on the silver screen. Director K.S. Adhiyaman has rehashed the best sequences from Sooraj Bharjatya films (and others of the same ilk) to make a pot-pourri full of melodrama, song n’dance, humour and rona dhona, all served in a single package. The film begins on a light note. Ayaan (Salman) comes from a joint family with traditional values like sanskar, respect for the elders, etc. One day, he meets a rich model Ahana (Shilpa) in a shop. Emotions are stirred in the very first meeting, but Ahana is not an easy catch. Coincidence brings the two together again on a number of occasions. Ayaan makes his moves, but Ahana doesn’t yield easily. Then, Ayaan comes to know about her likes and dislikes through her diary and makes all the right moves to woo her. Eventually, he wins her love. The two get married. All is well in the paradise until the honeymoon gets over. As soon as Ayaan and Ahana return from their honeymoon, differences start appearing. They begin to argue over small matters. Ahana finds it difficult to fit into Ayaan’s family. The last hope of salvaging the marriage falls flat after Ahana has a miscarriage. The couple approaches the courts for a divorce. The court, however, asks Ayaan and Ahana to reconcile and make another attempt to make the marriage work and start a family. But will things get sorted out between the two? Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar falters on many counts. The movie’s utterly trite and hackneyed story has been translated to the big screen by Adhiyaman in a collage of clichés. The turbulence between the two spouses hardly evokes any emotion. The tiff between the uppity bahu and her in-laws are banal. The situational turns in the story are corny, to put it modestly. Add to all this the barrage of unwarranted and unasked-for songs with forgettable melodies. Not even the presence of the crowd-pulling stars like Salman Khan and Shilpa Shetty can salvage this movie that is many years behind its time. Salman Khan plays the goody-goody man with a glint in the eye and a lump in the throat when it comes to emotional moments. We have seen similar acts by Salman in many other films. This one’s no different. Shilpa Shetty still makes a little impact playing the high-headed, liberal minded bahu who won’t bow down to another’s wishes. She credibly brings a slight negativity to her character. The movie also has a number of cardboard characters played by Reema Lagoo (Salman’s mother) , Mohnish Behl (brother-in-law), Shakti Kapoor (Shilpa’s father) and Supriya Karnik. Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar has a very obsolete, stale look. The styling of the actors reminds of the movies of the previous decade. The dialogues are straight out of the mushy saas-bahu, pati-patni dramas. The direction is plain mediocre.
