HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Will Aishwarya Rai match up to Rekha?08th Aug 2006 16.15 IST By Aparajita Ghosh Comparisons with gorgeous Rekha are inevitable as Aishwarya Rai ’s forthcoming epic feature Umrao Jaan is ready for release in the coming months. Rekha immortalized the character of the poetess and courtesan Umrao Jaan in filmmaker Muzaffar Ali’s 1981 movie of the same title. Her histrionics, her dances and her renditions of Urdu poetry make Rekha’s performance in the film one of the best in her acting career. 
Now, it is Aishwarya Rai, one of the most beautiful women in the world, who is going behind the veil to reprise the role. However, the film’s director J.P. Dutta claims that his Umrao Jaan is not the remake of Muzaffar Ali’s movie. Dutta insists his movie is an original take on the courtesan’s life, based on the script written by his father O.P. Dutta. Still, the two films will have their share of similarities since the tragic love story of Umrao Jaan remains the same. In Dutta’s words, Ash has given her own interpretation to the character rather than trying to match up to Rekha. Dutta adds that even Abhishek Bachchan ’s role in the film will surprise viewers who have seen Faroukh Sheikh in the old movie. Whether Ash immortalizes the courtesan from the novel by Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa (1905) the way Rekha did almost two decades ago will be known when the film releases in mid-October this year.
